篇三:唐诗英译中的意象研究开题报告

引言:中国是个诗歌的国度,是世界文化瑰宝中璀璨的明珠,唐朝是中国历史上政治开明、经济繁荣、文化昌盛的时期,在这个时期中国古体诗(格律诗)的创作达到了鼎盛。唐诗语言优美、文字流畅、意境高雅、情感真挚、思想开放而深邃,是中华民族文学宝库的精华,也是绽放在世界文苑里的一枝奇葩。诺贝尔文学评奖委员会主席埃斯库马克盛赞中国文学独特的艺术美时曾说:“世界上哪些作品能与中国的唐诗和《红楼梦》相比呢?”唐诗作为瑰宝,具有丰富的人文气息和艺术之美。诗歌的意象为诗歌美的重要体现形式,而意象的翻译直接关系到原诗美的传递。本文从美学角度出发,着眼于诗歌“意象”的定义和审美特征,阐释了诗歌的意象是人的存在形式通过“赋比兴”等手法而进行的诗意的表达,而人的本性和事物的异质同构的特点使诗歌意象的翻译成为可能。通过结合唐诗英译的例子,通过对译本分析并总结出,诗歌意象翻译中对原诗意象和意象背后的意境的理解是关键,在实践中还要结合译入语境对意象作阐释或调整,这些策略对诗歌翻译有着重要的指导意义,同时翻译的过程属于文化再现的过程,应该将文化背景纳入考虑范围,做到形美意美的统一。

1. 目的及意义

随着汉语热在全球升温以及孔子学院在世界各地的不断落户,外国人对中国文化的兴趣越来越浓。

唐诗作为中国文化的缩影,集历史,文化,经济,内涵于一体,意象更是传达这些含义的重要媒介。“意象”是中国古代文论中的一个重要概念,它集中地体现在中国古代诗歌创作中。英国汉学家威亚瑟.韦利把意象视为诗歌的灵魂,因为意象积淀和折射出丰富的中国文化底蕴。我国古代著名学者胡应麟也说:“古诗之妙,专求意象"。意与象统一、情与景交融,是中国古代诗歌的审美追求,在唐诗中得到了完美的表现。从某种意义上说,译诗即译意象,一首唐诗的英译过程,就是该诗的意象在英语中重组和再现的过程。从意象转译的角度研究唐诗英译,无疑是一项很有意义的课题。本论文以唐诗英译为研究对象,探讨“意象’’在中西文化中的内涵、演变及其对诗歌翻译的影响,选取有代表性的翻译家进行个案分析,进而提出诗歌意象转译的原则与策略。同时通过同首唐诗的不同翻译版本探讨诗歌翻译的注意事项,从而初步得出唐诗意象翻译的相关策略和技巧。

2. 国内外研究现状

中国近现代出现很多优秀的翻译家,严复,傅雷,梁启超,而唐诗英译更是翻译家乐此不疲的功课。当代中国优秀的唐诗翻译家代表有许渊冲,舟晓航,刘祖慰,孙强新,高嘉正.。以许渊冲着重唐诗的意象为例,他说过:"理论来自实践,又要受到实践的检验。这是我提出’创中国学派文学翻译理论’的哲学基础。"他正是在继承前人学说的基础上,集毕生翻译之经验加以发展,提出了自成一派的翻译理论"优化论",用"美化之艺术,创优似竞赛"这十个字加以概括,并且在《翻译的艺术》(1984)、《文学翻译谈》(1998)、《文学与翻译》(2003)等著作中,对形似与神似,求真与求美,翻译与创作,"翻译腔"和"四字成语",中西文化的差异,两种文化的竞赛等问题进行了具体的论述,归纳起来可以分为以下三论:"三美论"(意美、音美、形美)是译诗的本体论。三美之中,最重意美,音美次之,最后是形美,也就是说翻译是美的创造,所以神似胜于形似,要在传达原文意美的前提下,努力做到三美齐备。"三化论"(深化、等化、浅化)是译诗的方法论。分别利用加词、换词和减词等方法,通过意译来努力达到神似的境界。"三之论"(知之、好之、乐之)是译诗的目的论。知之是使人理解,这是翻译的基本要求;然后要求好之,能使人喜欢;最高的境界是乐之,能使人愉快。

同时唐诗在外国也是受到了关注和热捧。西方学者译介中国古典诗词(主要是唐诗)是从1898年赫本特·翟尔(Herbert Gile)的英译本《中国诗词》(Chinese Poetry in English Verse)开始的;20世纪20年代末或1929年威特·拜讷(Witter Bynner)在纽约出版了英译本《中国诗选》(A Chinese Anthology,美国最早的英译《唐诗三百首》);美国诗人庞德Ezra Pound (1885-1972) 译过汉武帝的《秋风辞》和李白的《长干行》等不少唐诗。 1940 年伦敦出版了叟姆· 杰尼斯(Soame Jenyns)《唐诗三百首选译》,1944年又出版了该书的增补版本。杰出的美国女翻译家阿瑟·薇丽 Arthur Waley (1889-1969)翻译出版了《诗经》,同时她生前至少还译了170 首包括唐诗在内的中国古典诗词。1971年纽约出版了A.R.戴维斯英文版《杜甫》(Tu Fu)一书;1973年美国耶鲁大学出版了阿塞 · 怀特 Arthur Wright《唐诗赏析》(Perspectives on the Tang);1987 年香港商务印书馆出版了许渊冲、吴钧陶等 39 位翻译家们英译的《唐诗三百首》(在美国诗歌翻译出版市场上占有一定份额,受到华人和美国学界的欢迎)。以埃兹拉·庞德和洛威尔为例为例,他们意象派的代表诗人,庞德从中国古典诗歌、日本俳句中生发出“诗歌意象”的理论,为东西方诗歌的互相借鉴做出了卓越贡献,而庞德退出意象派后,洛威尔继续领导该派活动,提出6项原则性主张,即语言要通俗准确,创造新节奏,题材完全自由,用意象来写诗,表现要具体、简练、

浓缩。后来洛威尔又加上“要含蓄,不用直陈”的原则。他们力求以鲜明的意象和短小精悍的“中国式”诗体去反对陈腐的19世纪后期英国诗风,有积极意义,但重点追求诗歌的形式和技巧,有忽视作品的社会意义和思想价值的倾向。 研究路线:

在阅读21篇文献以及35篇期刊后,本人拟通过比较方法以及许渊冲先生的“三美理论”分析唐诗的意象翻译策略以及经验,分为六部分进行。

引言部分引言综述了国内外学术界对唐诗英译与意象转译的研究现状,在分析借鉴前人研究成果的基础上,提出本文的研究方向。目前国内外学术界主要从语言学途径、文化途径和诗学途径对中国古代诗歌进行研究,从翻译学角度研究意象的较少,尤其是将文化背景考虑在内尤为奇缺,本文拟从文学翻译和文化背景角度对比翻译作品进行分析,从而得出结论。

第一章以比较研究的方法探讨“意象”在中西文化中的内涵及其演变。在对“意象"内涵进行历史性描述之后,着重分析了意象在中西方诗歌创作中的审美作用及表现形式,由此展示西方意象派诗歌中的意象与中国古诗中意象之间的差异。

第二章从文化学的角度对诗歌意象转译进行研究,分析诗歌意象的可译性及其局限。通过对诗歌意象在中西文化中不同的审美情感表现,可以看出对诗歌意象的审美差异是构成可译性障碍的主要原因,而翻译过程中这种审美差异的克服程度决定了诗歌翻译水平的高低。

第三章选取中西方在唐诗英译上颇有成就与影响的几位译者一一埃兹拉·庞德、许渊冲以及其他几位中外唐诗翻译家的部分代表性译作进行个案研究。通过具体的实例分析,进一步研究中西语言文化影响下诗歌意象的差异性,以及意象转译的技巧与局限性。

第四章作者运用翻译的层次理论对诗歌意象的翻译进行研究,提出诗歌意象翻译的原则与策略。

结论对全文进行了总结,说明意象翻译是诗歌翻译的关键问题,而考虑文化背景更是重中之重,亟待翻译理论界深入研究。本译实践分析不够,本课题研究还存在不足,有待今后进一步深化。
